I want you to know that they are the most loving and generous people and having dinner at their restaurant made us feel like one of the family. In fact, if you should ever stay in New Roads, they have an amazing motel called Morel's Inn on False River, and the rooms are very, very comfortable and accommodating and there is a garden courtyard just outside of every room. Amazing and comfortable and enjoyable to stay for the week and tour the town and buy antiques. The wife of the owner has a few antique shops across Southern Louisiana and she also has a handsome collections of antiques for sale in the restaurant. My wife had a blast and I couldn't get her to sit down and have her dinner. The menu diversity is excellent, from Cajun to authentic French creole cooking. Major Morel is never far from the table, constantly checking to make sure everything is going smoothly and enjoyably. They should be Zagat rated for at least 4.5 stars or more. We loved eating here. The meal took close to 3 hours and we didn't even have starter or after dinner drinks. Steaks were on super hot plates so even the rare steaks cooked up a little to medium rare by slicing up the steak and spreading them on the hot plate. Took over 35 minutes to get two lava cake desserts (free to the mom's) so that added additional time. The sides were okay but nothing exceptional (mushrooms, spinach, over-whipped potatoes). The spinach salad was good, but nothing exceptional for the other salads. Everything is ala carte so it's falls into upscale range. That's why it was dissapointing as the steak were juicy and marbled, but the flavor was not exceptional so doesn't seem to be aged much if any. The ambiance is pretty sad as not much to see and the place was very, very noisy. Difficult to hear one another in this place. Definetly not a romantic place to bring a date. Also as on the second floor, if you leave from the second floor, you go right out to the parking garage. Convenient for some but not much to add to the atmosphere of the place. They did take the price of two steaks off the bill, but I still would not consider coming back as I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling for a steakery to not be able to properly cook steaks to match their web site descriptions. Also, seems strange where they don't have the traditional bread and butter on the table. You get celery's, dips and toasted dry bread strips but not lovely soft bread to help sop up the steak juices.
