As it turns out, they do not administer a sedative before injecting the lethal medication that stops the heart. Because Pancho was not sedated first, he had a TERRIBLE reaction to the lethal injection, and let out 4 bloodcurdling screams before his heart stopped. While he was screaming, he stretched his legs long and tight. For the next minute or more after his heart stopped, he made these awful sounds that the vet said was air being emitted from this diaphragm. That made me scream when it first happened, because I thought he was still alive. The whole experience was beyond traumatic. Poor Pancho, who had experienced a serious illness for the last three years, wasn't even able to die in peace because the Animal Hospital of Cotati couldn't be bothered with giving a sedative first. They assured me that it is very rare of a dog to experience this reaction, but I can assure you, if it has happened even once before it happened to Pancho, they should have changed their procedure for euthanizing animals. The vet told me that Pancho's screams were from a kind of disorientation rather than pain, but whether the screams were from pain or fear, it was an awful, awful way to die. Now I have to live with the memory of that for the rest of my life. I will never use their services again.",,,,

They arrived on time and very efficiently set up for Max's complete yearly exam, blood tests, vaccines and medication refills. For the first time in his life he didn't need a muzzle or 5 people to hold him still. As a team and individually they were extremely compassionate and gentle with our Max, he was calm and didn't end up with his normal post vet trip stomach issues. I've been boarding my dog, a Springer Spaniel, at McKenna Kennels for the last 5 years. He is always excited to go there and likes the people who care for him. From my observations, the kennels are always clean, there is plenty of fresh clean water available at all times and his feeding schedule matches what he has at home. It is true that he doesn't get to roam the large field that can be seen from the road. That is used for bird dog training. The exercise/play yard is near the kennels, has plenty of sun and shade and fresh water. I have driven past the kennel when I got home early and have seen my dog, and others, in the play yard with a staff member having a great time. Just to be sure, I haven't been promised anything, nor do I expect anything for this review. I just hate to see a good business and people I trust with my best friends health and welfare get a bad reputation."
