Her father, Max Whittier, a farm boy from Maine, became a pioneer in the California oil industry. While looking for water, Max discovered oil. This led to the creation of the ""Rodeo Land and Water Company"" and eventually the community of Beverly Hills. From their home on Sunset Boulevard, Helen and her three brothers looked across the bean fields that stretched all the way to Wilshire Boulevard. Helen's mother died when she was 14 years old. When her father died several years later, her brothers took over the family business and the responsibility of raising Helen. She attended USC for a year before marrying Hoke Woodward. Hoke's family were neighbors on Alvarado Street. He and his brother drank fresh cow's milk after school with Helen and her brothers. Helen, Hoke, and their daughters, Winifred (Win) and Marcia, always had dogs in the house (usually golden retrievers). Helen loved the outdoors. She said, ""The days that the sun doesn't shine don't count."" Her happiest days were spent on the Del Mar beaches with her dogs. She loved dogs so much that the furniture in her home was covered in plastic, so that the dogs could lie anywhere. When friends came for dinner, there would often be no place to sit because the dogs took all the available seating. Win says that she believes her mother preferred dogs to people for their unconditional love and loyalty. After Win and Marcia were grown, Helen began investigating the possibility of forming an animal shelter. She bought an old farm with a wooden water tower in Rancho Santa Fe. Helen's good friend, Mel Morse, had many years of experience training and caring for animals. Working together they established the San Dieguito Animal Care and Education Center, with Mel serving as Director. Helen's vision was to create a special place where ""people help animals and animals help people."" Unfortunately, many of the structures that house Helen Woodward Animal Center today were not built until after Helen's death in 1983 at the age of 79, so she was not able to see her final dream realized. While he was screaming, he stretched his legs long and tight. For the next minute or more after his heart stopped, he made these awful sounds that the vet said was air being emitted from this diaphragm. That made me scream when it first happened, because I thought he was still alive. The whole experience was beyond traumatic. Poor Pancho, who had experienced a serious illness for the last three years, wasn't even able to die in peace because the Animal Hospital of Cotati couldn't be bothered with giving a sedative first. They assured me that it is very rare of a dog to experience this reaction, but I can assure you, if it has happened even once before it happened to Pancho, they should have changed their procedure for euthanizing animals. The vet told me that Pancho's screams were from a kind of disorientation rather than pain, but whether the screams were from pain or fear, it was an awful, awful way to die. After talking to all the vets explaining my problem most were helpful in telling me I needed to get my cat looked at as soon as possible all most all could get me in that day. But when it came down to cost there was a big difference They were by far the least expensive of the bunch for every item with the cost of a visit at $41 dollars where the next cheapest was $58. The cost of the blood panel and they did suggest we do a less than full to see if it warranted a more exhaustive one or not to save me money thankfully I did not need another it was $65 dollars the next cheapest was $104. And after a check up with me in the room they felt there was no reason for an ex-ray. They gave my little guy a urinalysis test which was $15 dollars and which found out what was wrong with him something had stressed him out and he had kidney problems assured me it was not serious gave me some medicine which was $11 dollars a good deal below the cost I was told others were charging. They asked me if I needed to apply for a interest free payment program that was available or not. The whole time the staff was warm and caring. The office was clean the house cat was adorable and the house dog gave me a good deal of attention. I was told to either call or come in if anything seemed wrong and they would check him out right away. This is how it is supposed to be Fast on time appointments even on day of call good service by a caring and knowledgeable staff. From now on I will trust these people with all my pet needs and will recommend them to others needing a good fair and caring vet for their furry friends they also have a low cost spay and neuter clinic which is in short supply around here. Give them a call and check them out.
